A MAN who was high on class-A drugs launched violent attacks against a shopkeeper — whose business he threatened to burn down — and his own sister.

Callum Warburton was jailed yesterday for two-and-a-half years for offences including racial abuse and biting his sister’s lip in an assault on the same afternoon.

Judge Martin Walsh told the 23-year-old: “This is foul, abusive and loutish behaviour. There was a shopkeeper who had done nothing. The language that you used was despicable and repulsive.”

Warburton was found urinating outside the AsBa newsagents by shopkeeper Bhavesh Ashani, on February 2, Bolton Crown Court heard. The Winchester Way shopkeeper challenged Warburton and returned to attend to his shop.

Moments later he heard a loud bang and saw a slab of concrete on the ground outside the shop.

Warburton, of Mobberley Road, followed the Mr Ashani inside and attempted to punch him several times while telling him to “go back to his own country”, along with other racial insults.

Mr Ashani struggled to pin Warburton to the floor and remove him from the premises. Then Warburton said: “Watch this,” the court heard.

Warburton returned to face Mr Ashani with a bottle of liquid which was later revealed to be petrol.

Prosecutor Geoff Whelan said: “Warburton walked around the corner and returned with what appeared to Mr Ashani to be a bottle of white wine.

“Mr Ashani thought he was going to do something and took hold of his arm.”

He wrestled the bottle from Warburton and poured out the liquid, then Mr Ashani realised from the smell that the liquid was petrol.

Warburton continued with his barrage of racial abuse, and the prosecution told the court that Warburton warned: “Just watch, I’ll burn your shop down tonight.”

He then returned to the family home in Mobberley Road, where his sister, mother and terminally ll father were present.

Mr Whelan said Warburton told his family he was going to kill Mr Ashani before turning on his sister, Zoe. At that point his mother called the police.

Mr Whelan said: “The defendant started to attack his sister. He put his hands on her throat and squeezed.”

Warburton began boiling water in a kettle. He “grabbed the sugar and started pouring it into the kettle,” his sister said.

She struggled to get Warburton away from the kettle, even jumping on his back to restrain him. But the altercation took another nasty turn, when Warburton bit down hard on his sister’s top lip, then punched and kicked her in the head.

Warburton’s father was able to hold him in a headlock and, with the help of others, pinned Warburton to the floor until the police arrived.

Colin Buckle, defending, said Warburton had taken class-A drugs before the attacks and it was out of character.

Warburton was sentenced to 30 months for assault resulting in actual bodily harm, racially aggravated harassment and threats to destroy property. Ms Warburton has a three-year restraining order on her brother, preventing him from contacting her. He was also sentenced for other offences including dangerous driving without a licence and insurance, and two burglaries.

A cutlery knife was found beneath him when he was taken away by police.

Presiding over the case, Judge Walsh said to Warburton: "This is foul, abusive and loutish behaviour. There was a shopkeeper who had done nothing. The language that you used was despicable and repulsive."
