WORK by Royal Bolton Hospital's doctors has been shortlisted for two national awards.

Dr Sue Greenhalgh, Consultant Physiotherapist at the hospital has been working with a team to improve knowledge of a rare condition called cauda equina syndrome.

She said: "Whilst this is a relatively rare condition it can have a devastating effect on patients and their families if not caught in a timely manner."

The syndrome results in nerves in the back being compressed and can cause permanent damage to the bladder, bowel and sexual function if not found and treated urgently.

Bolton and other hospitals have been working with patients and clinicians to raise awareness of the syndrome.

Their efforts have earned them places on the shortlist for Patient Safety Education and Training Award and the Best Partnership Solution Improving Patient Safety Award.
