FLORAL tributes have been left at the site of a road bridge where a man in his 70s died.

Thames Valley Police said on Friday that a man had been pronounced dead after falling from a bridge on the westbound carriageway of the A40 near Wheatley, close to Junction 8 of the M40. 

The force later confirmed that the man who died was from Wheatley, and was aged in his 70s.

The man's next of kin have been informed, police said, and a file is being prepared for the coroner. 

This morning flowers were seen pinned to the road bridge in an apparent tribute after the man's death.

When the news was announced yesterday, many Oxford Mail readers posted their condolences on social media.

One woman said: "Condolences to his family and so sorry to the people and professionals who are having to deal with the aftermath. What a sad day."

Announcing the death at the weekend Thames Valley Police said ambulance crews were called to the scene and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Responding to the tweet from police Twitter user Steve Bridges‏ said: "Thoughts to the officer who deals with the scene and then knocks on the door of the next of kin.

"Many officers would rather wade into a pub fight than deliver that news. Me included."

Following the incident the A40 was closed westbound for several hours and police asked drivers to avoid the area.

The westbound carriageway reopened yesterday morning.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman confirmed that the force is not investigating the death further and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
