FIRE crews have warned residents to be vigilant when cooking and ensure their smoke alarms are working after unattended food burst into flames and filled a kitchen with smoke.

The incident happened at a property off Wellington Road, Edgeworth, at around 5pm.

Crew rushed to the scene, and although the fire had already gone out when they arrived, the householder, who was alerted to the fire by her smoke alarm, was suffering from smoke inhalation and was given oxygen by firefighters.

Following the incident fire crews carried out a safe and well visit on the house.
