A TAKEAWAY will be allowed to sell alcohol despite police concerns that the move could contribute to “night time disorder”.

Italiano in Chorley New Road can now supply alcoholic drinks until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays and until midnight on other days.

Customers will now be able to buy alcohol from the takeaway and consume it off the premises as long as they have spent at least £10 on food.

However, police said that the new licence will cause problems for the area.

PC Andy Vernon told the council in a written statement that granting the licence would result in alcohol being sold to people who are already drunk, which is prohibited by law.

The police officer also noted that the takeaway is located within the boundaries of a designated public place order (DPPO) and is in close proximity to residential properties.

He said: “There is a likelihood that alcohol obtained from these premises will lead to a breach of the DPPO as customers will drink their purchases and contribute to night time disorder and increase the risk of violence therefore undermining the licensing objective of the prevention of crime and disorder.”

Licensing agent Bill Wadkin told a committee on Monday that the applicant, Hesamaddin Kamardi, was willing to compromise on the conditions of his licence.

But he argued that it was not reasonable for the police to object to the application based on a “supposition” with no reasons to support it.

He said: “The applicant has offered conditions which he believes address the objection and indicates he takes his responsibilities seriously.”

Mr Kamardi runs a takeaway with the same name in Chorley which also sells alcohol.

There were no objections from any other authorities or residents, according to Mr Wadkin.

Councillors approved the application but changed conditions forcing the takeaway to stop serving alcohol an hour earlier than what was originally requested.
