THE headteacher of Canon Slade has quit with immediate effect.

David Burton was appointed to the outstanding school and one of Bolton's best performing in September 2017, but a letter to parents today reveal he has decided to leave his post "with immediate" effect.

Reasons for his sudden departure are said to be "personal and family related".

Deputy head David Lever will become acting head until a new head is recruited.

The letter signed by John Burns, Chairman of Governors, stated: "David has thought long and hard about the decision to leave us and the reasons are personal and family related, which we mus respect.

"He wishes all associated with Canon Slade School the very best in the future.

"David takes our best wishes with him."

Canon Slade School in Bradshaw became an academy in December 2017 teaming up with St James' CE High School in Farnworth and Bolton St Catherine's Academy in Harwood under The Bishop Fraser Trust.

Headteacher of St James Tania Lewyckyj became CEO of the trust.

It adds: "David is our senior deputy head and has been a member of staff at Canon Slade for nearly 40 years.

"We're confident that David and the rest of our senior leadership team, with Mrs Lewyckyj providing additional support, will ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils and for our school."

The letter concludes: "I wanted you to be aware of the situation as soon as I could tell you, and before it becomes public, so you can understand the plans we are putting into place to ensure the continued smooth running of the Canon Slade."
