MOTORISTS can expect roadworks across the borough this month, with major projects starting and important routes expected to be disrupted.

Drivers who commonly travel into the town centre are set to be the most heavily impacted by the work as a number of schemes begin at the same time.

A one-way system is currently in place on Manor Street and Bank Street, which connect Bradshawgate with Folds Road, as Bolton Council begins the first phase of demolition in preparation for the Church Wharf regeneration project.

This work began in late April and will reduce the road down to one lane until the former Late Club and Club Ice buildings are completely knocked down.

The council will also have to ensure the land behind the buildings is supported where it meets the banks of the River Croal. This is expected to take until mid-September.

Meanwhile, those travelling into town on Blackburn Road will be delayed by roadworks put in place to allow gas company Cadent to replace an outdated cast-iron pipe.

This scheme will run until early November and is also likely to affect sections of Halliwell Road and Newnham Street. It follows a similar pipe replacement project which caused delays on Halliwell Road for a number of weeks.

Another key town centre route, Tonge Moor Road, is also undergoing work as engineers resurface the roadway.

This will mean ongoing delays with temporary traffic lights in place until May 17.

Outside of the town centre, motorists in Westhoughton have been suffering from delays caused by a carriageway repair works on Dicconson Lane.

Operatives from Bolton Council’s highways department expect this work, which has been taking place during off-peak hours, to be completed on Friday, May 31.

Another project in Little Lever will see engineers from Electricity North West sent out to repair and upkeep infrastructure on Stopes Road.

The majority of the disruption is expected to be concentrated around the junction with Hayward Avenue where temporary traffic lights will be set up from Tuesday, May 5, until Monday, May 20, when the scheme is set to be completed.

Finally, Le Mans Crescent remains disrupted by a one-way system meaning drivers trying to access the town hall can only leave the area via Howell Croft North.

This is due to the long-term reconstruction work at the Octagon Theatre which is expected to continue until at least mid-August.

Bolton Council has also warned about a further two major schemes set to begin in the coming months.

First, Thicketford Road will be closed during off-peak hours around the junction with Tonge Moor Road and Crompton Way for resurfacing work. This will be in place from June 3 until June 23.

Following this, temporary traffic lights will be set up on the junction of Trinity Street, Newport Street and Thynne Street, near Bolton Railway Station.

Motorists have been warned of major disruption because of this work, which will see the junction improved and a new road surface laid from July 1 until the end of the year.
