PLANS to build around 40 houses next to the controversial Bowlands Hey development have been revealed.

Seddon Homes wants to build the two to four-bedroom houses behind existing properties in Collingwood Way.

A total of 14 affordable homes would be "pepper potted" within the site, according to the planning application.

This includes nine two-bedroom terraced houses for social rent and five three-bedroom semi-detached houses for intermediate ownership.

The applicant added: "Seddon Homes have a proven track record of providing high-quality aspirational housing and this scheme has been designed in a way which delivers a fundamentally sustainable and superior environment."

The site lies to the east of The Vistas – a 129-home development currently under construction following a successful appeal by Bellway Homes last year.

Alan Riley, who lives nearby in Green Meadows, objected to the second phase of the Bowlands Hey development which was refused after a public inquiry in January.

On first impression, he worried that approving this latest application could lead to more green spaces in the area being "infilled" with housing in the long run.

Newly-elected councillor Deirdre McGeown has spoken to residents in her ward who are concerned about the plans.

She said: "My concern is the impact that these extra houses are going to have on the area. Collingwood Way, Peel Street, Grundy Street – they're all going to be impacted by these extra houses."

Aside from traffic concerns, the new Lib Dem councillor for Westhoughton South is also worried because GPs and schools are "already stretched".

Fellow ward councillor Anna-Marie Watters told The Bolton News that she has fought "extremely hard" to protect green spaces in Westhoughton.

However, the Labour councillor would not comment on this particular application in case she still sits on the planning committee after the upcoming reshuffle.

Members of the planning committee are excepted not to make judgements on an application before a decision is made.

Local Lib Dem councillor David Wilkinson did not comment for the same reason.
