TIME is running out to have your say on plans to merge two fire stations in Bolton.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has revealed proposals to help it make £12.8 million worth of savings by 2022. The body claims that its current operational model is “not sustainable” after 10 years of austerity.

Under the plans Bolton Central and Bolton North Community Fire Stations could be merged to create a new station with one less fire engine.

Despite the changes GMFRS says it will ensure that response times are faster than the national average.

However, a wave of public outcry has followed the announcement, and MP Sir David Crausby has started a petition against cuts to the fire service.

A public consultation has been launched on the proposals but the clock is ticking and residents have until the end of the month, May 31, to have their say.

Chief Fire Officer Jim Wallace said: “The proposals we are consulting on are essential to ensure GMFRS is fit for the future and to serve the communities of Greater Manchester. As such, it is important those communities are involved in this process and get a chance to have their say.”
