THE fascinating local tradition of moorland treks to celebrate a great American poet will be explored in a presentation at Bolton Socialist Club this Friday.
Stuart Murray will give an illustrated talk about the history of the modern walks in honour of Walt Whitman.
As is well-known, a group of 19th century Boltonians who admired Whitman’s works formed a unique relationship with the poet.
Every year on his birthday they would walk the moors above Bolton, picnic and read aloud some of his poems.
The tradition died out but was reignited in the 1980s by Paul Salveson, a Whitman expert.
The walks continue to this day and this year’s will be extra special as it is the 200th anniversary of Whitman’s birth.
Those wishing to join in should meet at Barrow Bridge picnic site at 2pm on Jube 1.
Mr Murray will be speaking at length about the walks and showing photographs.
The presentation is free but to reserve a place please phone Chris Chilton on 07856 466070.
