FIRE chiefs have warned homeowners to take care after dealing with more than 400 blazes related to cooking in the first half of the year.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) raised the issue after an incident in Stockport over the weekend took the attention of five fire engines and a hydraulic platform.

The fire had been caused by an unattended cooker and the blaze caused smoke to fill the flat. One person, who was sleeping, had to be rescued by firefighters.

The service is now urging members of the public to avoid being careless in the kitchen as it can cost lives.

Station Manager Nick Hince said: "The professionalism of our firefighters at this incident has thankfully led to a positive outcome for the resident.

"This incident is a timely reminder that you should never leave cooking unattended, a fire can start in a matter of seconds and the consequences can be severe."

He added: "There are simple steps that can be taken to help keep you, your family and other residents safe when living in high rise blocks.

"These steps include testing your smoke alarms on a weekly basis, keeping doorways, hallways and communal areas free from clutter and reporting any obstructions if you see them."
