A 69-year-old man has suffered serious head injuries after an assault outside a pub in Bromley Cross.

The incident happened outside The Flag Inn, in Arnold Road, shortly before 11.30pm last night.

The man was taken to hospital and is understood to be in an induced coma.

A 23-year-old was arrested nearby and has since been charged on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the incident.

A scene was in place outside the pub throughout yesterday, while patrols were also stepped up in the area.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly after 11.25pm on Friday, police were called to reports that a man had been assaulted outside a pub on Arnold Road in Bromley Cross. 

"Officers attended and a 69-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains for treatment for serious head injuries.

"A 23-year-old man was arrested nearby and has since been charged with grievous bodily harm in connection to the incident."

Bromley Cross councillor David Greenhalgh took to Facebook on Saturday morning to inform residents of the incident.

He said: "MAJOR ASSAULT OUTSIDE THE FLAG

"Police attended an incident of a male assaulted at 23.26hrs last night (Friday) Log Ref: 2732 24/5/19.

"Police have arrested a man in connection with the assault.

"This was a serious assault, and there is currently a scene being resourced by officers. I would urge anyone with 'pertinent' information to contact the police immediately.

"The police will be increasing patrols within the area, not least for reassurance purposes."
