A DREAM came true for one lifelong Bolton Wanderers fan who got to meet his sporting hero.

Colin Hilton, 76, enjoyed a cup of tea and a chat with former player and fan favourite Tony Kelly in a specially arranged meeting at the Bolton Hub community centre.

Mr Hilton got his first Wanderers' season ticket in the late 1960s and, fortunately, his wife, Pauline, 72, shared his passion. Their devotion to the club matched their devotion to each other and Burnden Park was the backdrop for many of their dates during their courting days.

"I knew he would love meeting Tony," said Mrs Hilton, who lives in Kearsley.

As he has Alzheimer's, Mr Hilton moved into Bolton's Shannon Court Nursing Home six months ago. The Home has joined the newly established Bolton Care Home Excellence Programme which aims to improve residents' wellbeing by getting them involved in the community.

It was through its involvement with the programme that the trip was made possible.

Ever the loyal fan, Mr Hilton wore his Wanderers' cap, jumper and coat for the big day.

"He was as happy as he could be, given his condition," said Mrs Hilton. "It was a positive and very worthwhile experience for him and I can't thank the care home and Tony Kelly enough for making his dream come true."

And even though Colin has memory problems, commemorative photographs taken on the day are guaranteed to bring a smile to his face.
