AN MP has thrown his backing behind funding to regenerate the town centre.

Bolton Council’s bid for access to a multi-million pound government funding pot was supported in Parliament this week by Chris Green.

The bid seeks £1.7m of investment from the Future High Streets Fund, which will support the creation of retail and leisure facilities, a town bike scheme and a traffic model to improve transport links across the borough.

The Bolton West MP raised the issue during Prime Minister’s Questions, praising the current council leader David Greenhalgh, who took over after a landmark election earlier this year.

The Future High Streets Fund aims to make town centres “fit for the future” and asks for specific reference to local authority projects which has not been able to progress because of a “lack of capital funding”.

The closing date for the first phase of applications to the scheme was March 22, with a the government set to announce those projects which reached the second phase by summer of this year.
