DOZENS of homes are still without electricity today after a power cut.

Electricity North West say the problems for residents in Great Lever were due to a fault at a nearby substation, which was caused by a break-in at about 1.30am on Saturday.

More than a thousand households were initially affected, but engineers managed to restore power to most by 3.30am.

However, hundreds of homes still experienced problems throughout the day.

As engineers tried to solve the problem, a catering van cooked up more than 800 breakfasts and launches for residents.

Electricity NW say they had to cut customers’ electricity supply off to carry out checks after receiving reports of damage to appliances at some homes.

Firefighters were also called to several homes to deal with light bulbs and fuses blowing.

Dozens of homes are still having problems, and a spokesman for Electricty NW said they were "working hard" to restore power to them.

A spokesperson from Electricity North West, said: “We received reports of a power cut affecting 1,343 customers in Great Lever at 1:32am on Saturday morning due to a fault at a local substation which was caused by a break in.

“Our engineers responded quickly and restored power to 1,088 customers by 3:33am.

“Last night, we managed to restore power to around 60 customers. We will again be providing more on site catering today outside the Premier Convenience store on Hurston Road and our engineers are working hard to restore power to the remaining customers.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and if customers would like any further information they can contact us 24/7 on the free 105 number, online and on social media.”

Yesterday, councillor Sue Haworth said: “It’s pretty awful today for those getting up to start the day and for those with medical needs who require a power supply.

"The worry is it will take longer to fix.”
