RESEARCH also found that breakfast habits were changing with young people eating on the go and/or eating the wrong things.

MP Sir David Crausby believes that unless habits change the next generation will have a lower lifespan than that of this generation.

"People are not eating properly, modern society has changing values. For the first time life span of the next generation could shorten and young people need to realise the benefits of eating healthily,” he said.

Sir David said that the growth of processed and convenience food had replaced traditional healthier options.

"There are pressures on families but both my parents worked but I always had breakfast at time when there was a sense the country was not as wealthy.

He said education played a part and re-evaluating priorities in society, and to start realising the importance of eating well.

The NHS website states that research suggests people who eat breakfast are slimmer because they tend to eat less during the day.
