FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man who had slipped down an embankment and was stranded by the side of a river.

Crews were called to Trinity Retail Park at 10.30pm last night.

They were on the scene for an hour as they brought the man, thought to be around 45-years-old to safety.

Watch Manager Martin Finch at Bolton Central Fire Station said: "He had slipped down the embankment, falling 8ft down and was stranded by the side of the River Croal.

"We used a turntable ladder, which can go below ground level, to bring him up."

Three fire engines and two special vehicles were mobilised to the area.

The man was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital.

Firefighters were on the scene for an hour.
