CALLS have been to establish a permanent memorial in honour of Bolton aid worker Alan Henning in his home city.

A petition has been started and letter signed by local councillors and MPs has also been sent to council bosses for a lasting tribute in his memory.

Mr Henning, a 47-year-old father-of-two was murdered by Islamic State after going to Syria as part of an aid convoy which set off from Bolton to help orphans.

More than 1,700 people have signed a petition and a letter signed by Salford councillors has been sent to Cllr Derek Antrobus, lead member for for planning and sustainable development in Salford.

It calls for a road in Eccles, where Mr Henning lived, to be named Alan Henning Way.

The letter states: “The people of Salford are united in wanting to honour Alan’s memory; he is an inspiration that future generations of Salfordians will remember with pride.

“Alan’s abiding heroism deserves to be immortalised in his home city, which, to this day carries in his heart. If each of us approached life the same way Alan Henning did, the world would be a kinder more decent place.

“We the undersigned, call on Salford City Council to name a road in Eccles, Alan Henning Way.”

The letter also states that Mr Henning was “determined to deliver aid to people who desperately needed it, irrespective of the risks. Alan ultimately gave his life to help people, far away from his home “He was true humanitarian who cared about people, even beyond his own safety.”
