In 1989, British Rail named an engine after the Wanderers. It was to be used on Intercity routes around the country, and would also haul the Royal train. Hundreds of people turned up at Trinity Street to see the Mayor, Cllr Ken MacIvor officially name the locomotive, and Nat Lofthouse was on hand to give his approval.
