THE region is set for a miserable end to the weekend, with a warning in place for thunderstorms.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Greater Manchester and Lancashire.

They have warned stormy conditions may bring torrential rain and lightning, with possible flooding and disruption to travel.

A spokesman said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life."

Spells of rain are expected from Sunday afternoon which could turn heavy and thundery. Highs of 20C are expected. 

Forecasters have warned where thunderstorms develop, 20 to 30mm of rain may fall within an hour, and close to 50mm of rain may fall in two to three hours.

Drivers have also been warned to expect disruption on the roads.

The spokesman continued: "Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."
