AS Women’s World Cup fever sweeps across the country, a footballer from Bolton is hoping to inspire the next generation of Lionesses.

Port Vale midfielder Luke Joyce, who is from Over Hulton, launched his own football academy in April. He runs weekly sessions at Westhoughton Leisure Centre every Thursday.

Due to the success, the 31-year-old has now organised some Saturday sessions, specifically aimed at girls.

He said: “It seemed a good time to do it with the Women’s World Cup being on television. Lots of girls are watching it and getting inspired to play.”

The two-hour sessions are open to girls between the ages of seven and 14 and are run from Lostock Sports Club, in Chew Moor Lane.

Due to pre-season starting soon, only three sessions were arranged but if it is a success, Luke will consider running them again in future.

Luke, who played for Accrington Stanley for six seasons, added: “I wanted to do it to see if the demand is there. It’s been a bit of a slow burner so far. Unfortunately we had to postpone the first session due to poor weather.

“There is another session this weekend and one next Saturday June 29.”

A professional for the last 13 years, Luke believes he has a lot of wisdom to impart on boys and girls at his academy.

“They can always ask me questions,” he said. “Whether that’s about getting released or them worrying about getting signed. I want to be a mentor for them as well as a coach.”
