A TEENAGE boy has died in a Bolton park.

Police were called shortly after 3am on Sunday to a report of concern for the welfare of a boy at Thomasson Park in Halliwell.

Emergency services attended but the boy, believed to be aged 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing crime scene investigation officers in Thomasson Park throughout the day.

Forensic officers were working in the park and a white tent was set up close to the swings on the playground.

Officers say they are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances surrounding the death, but it is not currently being treated as suspicious.

Police tactical aid units and a specialist search unit were also seen working inside the park.

The playground and a large patch of grass separating it from Mere Hall were taped off while investigations were carried out.

After the discovery was made, neighbours living close to the park spoke of their shock.

Mukhtar Ahmed, who lives in Yarrow Place, said he saw police and what looked like a body covered up when he drove past the park on his way to work at 5am.

He added: “It is very sad, whatever has happened. This is not the first time they have found a body on the playground.”

Cllr Akhtar Zaman, who represents Halliwell ward, added: “This is a tragic incident and it is shocking for the community. My thoughts are with the family of the young man at this time.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call police on 0161 856 5757 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
