THE 13th annual Scarecrow Festival brought hundreds of visitors out to admire the farmyard creations.

A huge 136 scarecrows popped up around the town over the weekend, with visitors able to hunt down each on and tick them off their lists, following a programme giving clues.

Everyone from the likes of the Queen, Spider-Man and Vincent Van Gogh made an appearance at the festival, all with scarecrow likenesses made by residents in Blackrod.

Each scarecrow was distinctly unique as Blackrod came together to give as many themes as possible.

Characters from TV’s Game of Thrones came to town to join the festivities — with a Jon Snow scarecrow appearing alongside teddy dragons.

A straw version of Mary Poppins also floated into town with her characteristic Edwardian dress and magical umbrella.

Blackrod Primary School, Blackrod Church School and the Owls Nursery all united to put on children’s activities throughout the two days.

St Katharine’s Church also provided refreshments for the crowds soaking up the summer sun.

Blackrod Methodist and the library began hosting the town’s annual art exhibition, providing even more entertainment to suit everybody over the course of the weekend.

Free minibuses ferried visitors to and from the festival locations, meaning that all ages could tick of the scarecrows on their list.

Jean Hibbert, the festival organiser, said: “It started off a bit drizzly on Saturday, but then the sun came out and so did the crowds.

“It was a really great atmosphere once again, everybody has been so up for it and there’s been some fantastic ideas.”

This year marked Ms Hibbert’s last festival as its organiser, she says the scarecrow festival needs “younger legs” to take it forward.

After 13 years at the helm, she said: “We want to say thank you to everybody.

“This is our last year, my husband and I are retiring from organising it. If anybody wants to get in touch with me, it’s all set up if someone wants to take it on. I’ll still be doing a scarecrow though.”

Ms Hibbert advises anyone interested in taking on the role to call her on 01204 691575.
