DRIVERS faced delays on a busy route into Bolton this afternoon after a car broke down a grass verge.

The incident happened on the M61 northbound, near to the turn off for St Peter's Way.

The vehicle was towed to the hard shoulder before being recovered.

No one was injured in the incident, although traffic police warned drivers to take care in the wet conditions.

Pictures posted by police on social media show that the vehicle, a black BMW, sustained several flat tyres as a result of the incident.

GMP traffic tweeted: "Delays on A666/M61 N/B earlier, after this driver managed a little gardening on the verge where the carriageway splits.

"Towed to safety of the hard shoulder by #ME54 💪 in our X5 🚔 to await recovery. Thankfully no injuries

"Please take care in wet conditions."
