A man, believed to be in his late 20s, was taken to hospital after the shooting which took place at around noon in the car park close to the Outline Health and Fitness, on Lever Street, Great Lever.

The extent of his injuries are unknown but there was a large police presence at the scene yesterday, with armed police, as well as plain clothes and uniformed officers attending.

At around 2pm officers extended the cordon even further into the car park, and part of St Marks Street was also shut to traffic.

Later crime scene investigators were drafted in and carried out a search of the car park.

On Friday evening, as twilight fell, a tactical aid unit carried out a fingertip search at the scene.

Superintendent Rick Jackson, from GMP’s Bolton District, said: “We believe this was a targeted shooting and we have no reason to believe there is a wider risk to the public.

“There is a large police presence at the scene as we continue with our enquiries and we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or witnessed anything suspicious, to get in touch.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they took the victim to hospital.

People trying to access the gym were told they couldn’t and businesses were told not to enter the car park as it was a “crime scene”.

A number of workers said they heard three shots.

One man, who works in the area asked not to be identified said: “People working in the area said they heard three shots.

"At first they didn’t know what the noise was, they thought it was coming from the other business — and they thought it was coming from this business.

“It was only when they looked out and saw what had happened. From what I understand customers at the gym called the ambulance.

“The man who did it ran away. The paramedic in the rapid response arrived quickly.”

He added: “I  saw the paramedics putting the person on to the stretcher.

“Apparently they shot at a car window three times. Someone in dark clothing with a hoodie walked up and shot and then ran off. If he was in a car it was parked a distance away.”

He added: “Police have been taking away CCTV footage from local businesses, and that’s how we know what the person who shot him looked like.”
