A FORMER bank could be converted into a new restaurant, plans have revealed.

The vacant NatWest branch in Derby Street could be used as a cafe or restaurant if the proposals are passed.

The proposed development could create around 10 to 12 additional full time and part time jobs, according to the plans put together by RA Design & Project Management Ltd.

In a planning statement, the architectural consultancy argues that the "high-quality conversion" would bring the building back into "effective use".

It said: "The applicant seeks to bring a high-quality dining establishment to the locality, capitalising on a new business venture whilst enhancing the already diverse and vibrant food offer of the local area [...] which promotes consumer choice alongside sustainable economic development."

Mr J Patel, who is listed as the applicant, also intends to cater for college and university students, given the site's close proximity to the campus, according to the application.

No external alterations would be made to the building if the plans go ahead, but there would be some changes internally.

The proposed customer seating area, food preparation area and a toilet will be concentrated at ground floor whilst the basement will be used for storage and staff activities.

The operating hours have been proposed as 11am to 11pm throughout the week.

The planning agent added: "The Applicant is willing to invest considerable time and resources in order to bring to fruition a high-quality dining facility which will greatly enhance the offer of the local area and generate employment in addition to benefitting local businesses through the supply chain effect."

Great Lever councillor Madeline Murray said she is looking forward to seeing what the new restaurant would look like if plans are approved.

She said: “If it’s an old building, it would be quite nice inside. We don’t want empty buildings. Nobody wants empty buildings in our ward because it just attracts anti-social behaviour. If it’s being used we should be happy about it.”

Town hall officers are due to decide the outcome of the planning application by next month.
