PRIMARY school children are well equipped to look after themselves this summer thanks to a new free guide to staying safe and well.

And families are being urged to make use of the guide to "Be Active, Be in the Know and Be Prepared" this summer

NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has produced its popular Think Summer booklet for the third year running, and it’s jam-packed full of tips and advice on supporting families through the summer holidays.

The booklet has been delivered to all Bolton primary schools, with each child taking home a copy.

Copies will also be available to pick up at other locations across the borough including local GP practices and libraries.

Dr Wirin Bhatiani, Chair of NHS Bolton Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Summer is an extremely busy and exciting time for families, especially trying to keep the kids entertained throughout the six week break.

“Most families will have holidays planned and days out on the agenda, especially if the hot weather continues!

“However, to make the most of Summer it’s important that we take care of all members of the family so everyone can stay healthy, happy, and well.

“I would urge you to pick up a copy of our Think Summer guide, where you can find useful information on things like childhood illnesses, common summer ailments and practical guidance on what to do in a heatwave and how to protect yourself against sunburn.”

There is guidance on what to do if a child has scarlet fever, slapped cheek syndrome or measles and how you can easily treat some conditions at home, like hayfever, insect bites and upset tummies.

The booklet also has lots of ideas about being more active over the holidays along with how to keep children safe online.

There is also a directory which includes a number of contacts and reminders of important dates, including vaccinations.
