WORRIED residents have been assured that a dangerously corroded pelican crossing is to be replaced soon with a zebra equivalent.

Road safety concerns were raised after the original near the Bull’s Head in Redlam, Blackburn, was suddenly removed last month.

Residents said say it made crossing the road prove difficult, especially for elderly people seeking to access the doctors and dentist's surgeries.

Martin Eden, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's environment boss, said: “The crossing was deemed dangerous following a recent planned inspection and we are undertaking urgent works.

“This will include installing a new zebra crossing – which will be completed as soon as we receive the equipment from our suppliers.

“Removing the crossing was a last resort, but we had to act quickly once the issue was identified.”

The inspection had discovered that the crossing poles were badly corroded.

Former Beardwood with Lammack councillor Imtiaz Ali,w ho took up the issue on behalf of residents, said: "I am pleased the road will soon be made safe again.."
