CELEBRATIONS start for Thornleigh Salesian College as students ring in another year of success.

Among their star students is Robyn Johnston, who gained three A grades and is going to study Veterinary Science at the Royal Veterinary College in London.

Others include Claire Cornmell, Adam Ali, Kasim Mansur, Aisha Haiderkhan, Joseph Mackey, Ellie Gettinby and Faheema Kapadia, who are all going to study medicine.

Headteacher Alison Burrowes said: “All the hard work and dedication of students and staff, together with the support of their parents has paid off and we congratulate them all on their success.

Top pupil Olivia O’Callaghan is going to study Environmental Science in Liverpool.

She is among a group of Thornleigh students heading to Liverpool for the next stage of their education.

Aebel Shajan, Matthew Flannaghan and Hishaam Miyaji are all going to study STEM based subjects in Liverpool and gained outstanding results.

Ms O'Callaghan said: “I am really looking forward to the course at Liverpool University.

“It will build on my passion for Geography and I am especially pleased that many of my fellow classmates are also either at my university, or in other Liverpool universities.

“It will be a quality night out to balance all the hard work we will do”.

“We wish all of our students the very best of luck as they go off to university, apprenticeships or employment.”

Although the spread of university travel has narrowed this year for Thornleigh, the university courses and employment destinations have widened.

New courses include International Football Management and Cyber Security, and the number of degree apprenticeship routes for students has also increased.

Jack Hodkinson, gaining AAB, has opted to start a degree-level apprenticeship with the civil service and in taxation advice.

He said: “This route allows me to start a role that harnesses the skills I have taken from college whilst earning a good salary.

"I will also have my degree fully funded by the government”.

The headteacher added: "It has been a great year for a great group of students."
