BIRTHDAY celebrations got off to a great start for Canon Slade pupil Alice Fletcher who picked up her results on the day she turned 16.

The teenager ­— who was the youngest in her class ­— achieved three 9s, four 8s, three 7s and a B.

"I am really happy and it is a good birthday," said Alice, who is gong to study English literature, psychology and religious studies, "It's amazing to have these grades."

Sona John achieved the grades she needs to start her journey as a young doctor.

Getting top grades was essential for her to pursue her dream to have a career in medicine.

"I was quite nervous because I need good grades and universities look at your GCSE grades for medicine. I have wanted to be a doctor every since I was little and saw doctors helping others people and I wanted to do it."

And her hard work over two years including the "final dash" paid off when she achieved six 9s, two 8s 7, 6.

Penny Townsend is off to Leeds Festival knowing she has a bright future ahead of her after scoring seven 9s and three 8s.

She will continue her studies at Canon Slade studying maths, physics and geography.

"I did not know what to expect and now going to the festival will be a huge celebration.

"I want to become a mechanical engineer because I like maths, physics and cars!"

Niamh Hardman also celebrated outstanding grades with five 9s, two 8s and 7 and two 6.

She is going to Runshaw College to study A-levels.

"I worked really hard and am gong to miss Canon Slade because the teachers have been so supportive."

Other high-achievers at the school included Joe Cooper, who achieved seven 9s, one 8, two 7s and A; Lucas Greenhalgh who gained six 9s, two 8s, 7 and 6 and Lucy Currid who achieved straight 9s.

She said: "I laughed and cried! I knew I had try my best and I worked really hard and am really pleased."
