Bury’s bid to have their expulsion overturned by the EFL has been rejected.

The Shakers had hoped a new bid to take over the financially stricken club would give them a reprieve and ensure their 125 years in the Football League did not come to an end.

But despite backing from MPs James Frith and Ivan Lewis and mounting public support, an online petition reaching more than 10,000 signatures in a matter hours, the EFL have stood firm after Tuesday’s initial decision sent shockwaves through football and the wider Bury community.

The bid is reported to have come from Brazilian Gustavo Ferreira and his goldmining firm WGS Mining, their financial offer for the Gigg Lane club around £7 million.

“We have just been made aware the EFL have refused to rescind their decision to expel Bury FC from the league,” fans group Forever Bury said in a statement on Twitter.

“This is a difficult time for us all. However, be assured that we are looking at all of the options available at this moment in time.”

Lewis said on Twitter: “Very disappointed by EFL decision today and their failure to engage seriously with a credible plan to save the club.

“They have shown total disregard for the impact on the amazing fans and our entire town.

“I will be meeting fans and Forever Bury later. All options are open.”

Fellow MP Frith indicated that this was just the beginning of the fight with legal action one avenue open.

"Another striking blow from the EFL and their refusal to revoke the expulsion from the Football League," he said on social media.

"We’ll up the ante now with parliamentary and legal action. Updates to follow. Including my calls for investigation into the financial irregularities that caused this mess."
