The Search for Britain’s Golden Voice - a competition to find the voice of the Speaking Clock - reached Bolton in September 1984. Margaret Huggett and Paul Matthews were both heat winners with a £5,000 prize at stake. They were through to a regional final with the winner of that up for selection as the new voice of the Speaking Clock. The person eventually selected was Brian Cobby whose voice was used until 2007.
