Tahera Essap raised over £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support with her 'Chai and Brunch' even on Sunday September 15.

Tahera, 49, sadly lost two friends to breast cancer, and chose Macmillan's coffee morning as her first fundraising event in honour of them.

She said: "It's a cause really close to my heart because of the friends I've lost. Thursday 26 will mark a year since one of them passed, and her sister came all the way from Leicester to be with us.

"It went a lot better than I expected, I would have been happy raising £1,000 but this is fantastic."

Tahera booked the Cobden Community Centre for the event which lasted from 12-5pm.

A group of ladies from Macmillan came in at 1pm to speak about cancer.

The talk was conducted in three languages, English, Urdu, and Gujarati.

Tahera had only arranged for a Gujarati translation of the talk, but an attendee also gave the talk in Urdu for a lady from Pakistan.

She said: "It was an eye opener for the Asian community. They are quite scared of the cancer word.

"They do not know much about cancer or how to check for lumps. The talk was great and really good for everyone there."

A donation of £5 for adults, and £1 for children was required for entry, and everyone was encouraged to eat as much as they wanted to.

The food theme was 'finger food', with sweet and savory options. Pizzas and chicken wings were donated by local takeaways, with the rest of the food provided by companies or people looking to support Tahera.
