PASSENGERS hoping to travel to Southport will have to make alternative arrangements as the railway from Wigan is set to temporarily close.

Journeys between the seaside town and Parbold will be replaced by buses from Saturday, November 16, to Wednesday, November 20.

This is to allow Network Rail to completely replace the railway bridge in Burscough as part of the Great North Rail Project.

To allow engineers to carry out the work, there will also be a seven-day closure of the canal towpath beneath the bridge from Friday 15 November.

Ian Jones, route delivery director for Network Rail North West, said: “This essential refurbishment is part of the Great North Rail Project and will mean that the bridge will be fit for purpose for decades to come. I'm sorry for any impact the work will have and would like to thank passengers in advance for their patience.”

Chris Jackson, regional director from Northern, promised passengers that the train firm would work with Network Rail to "keep disruption to a minimum".
