THE UK government has been urged to support the people of Kashmir after India stripped the region of its special status leading to concerns over the human rights abuses.
Cllr Mohammed Iqbal said at this week’s full council meeting: “This borough has many residents member of Bolton family who originate from the States of Jammu and Kashmir who still have family and friends living there and are therefore very concerned about the recent developments in Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir.
“This motion I am moving is not about politics, nor is about land, it is about human suffering, human rights abuses and attack of fundamental right s of people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
He added: “The curfew is now in its ninth, people are being tried like caged animals, people are being held hostage in their own homes.”
Cllr Iqbal’s motion was passed and urges the Government to be the voice of the oppressed people of Jammu and Kashmir and support for the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A and an end to direct rule and withdrawal of all troops from the region.
In August hundreds of protesters gathered in Bolton to stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir.
