COUNTER Terrorism officers are continuing their investigation into the attack at the Arndale Shopping Centre.

A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of committing a terrorism offence.

The arrested man was considered unfit to be kept in custody and had to be transferred to a mental health detention.

He has now been assessed by specialist doctors and has been compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act.

The police investigation has revealed that at least one member of staff from the Arndale and a member of the public intervened in the attack.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "There is not believed to be any wider threat to the communities of Greater Manchester and the attacker is believed to have acted alone.

"The investigation will continue in order to fully understand the motives behind the attack.

"We now know that at least one member of staff from the Arndale and a member of the public intervened in the attack and we would like to praise and thank them for their bravery."

Police have appealed for anyone with images or footage taken during the incident on Friday to share them in via http://www.ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk/.
