FIRE crews have issued advice after being called to assist with a smoking kitchen oven.

A female tenant, aged in her mid-50s, called 999 after seeing smoke issuing from the appliance at her home in Red Lane, Breightmet.

One crew from Bolton North Fire Station attended at about midnight on Saturday and made the oven safe.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews were called to a fire in Red Lane, Bolton.

"The fire involved a possibly defective cooker in the kitchen of a house.

"Firefighters isolated the electrical supply to the cooker and make the scene safe. We were there for just over 20 minutes."

At the time of the incident, crews advised residents to ensure their ovens are clean.

However, the resident insisted that the fire officer had stated her oven was clean.

Craig Cubbins, watch manager, said: "The resident did the right thing by turning off the main electricity supply and waiting outside the building until we arrived.

"We inspected the oven.

"Sometimes there can be an accumulation of fat or food remains which causes the smoke.

"Our safety advice would be to make sure your ovens are clean."
