AN events team, made up primarily of Harper Green pupils, is hoping to bring Christmas markets to Farnworth.

The Farnworth and Kearsley Events Team was formed in July in response to people of the two towns complaining that there was not enough to do for residents.

Year 11 students Ryan Bromley, Charley Wray, Callum Chapfield and Conner McMullen have already organised a sold out residential trip to Low Mill Outdoor Centre in the Yorkshire Dales.

Their next plan is much closer to home and involves bringing a Christmas Market to Farnworth.

Ryan, 15, said: "I put a post on Facebook about two months ago asking people for event ideas and we had about 100 comments.

"By far the most popular options were for a Christmas market or an artisan market.

"Unfortunately due to the timescale from now until Christmas it would be impossible to get the correct permission and licences to do it in Brackley Street.

"One of our volunteers works in the Indoor Market Place and they've said we can hold it there. We're also going to use Unit 14 Brackley Street because that's free to the community."

Ryan, of Trentham Close, wants to become a chef in the Army once he completes his studies.

He previously hit the headlines in May, when he helped to save a man's life using skills he had learned in the Cadets.

Ryan said the reaction of people to the events team has been overwhelming, especially since revealing how young he and the other members are.

"It's all been really positive," he added.

"I find it good communicating with people and I think it will look really good on my CV.

"Everyone has been really surprised with how young I am and it was the same situation when I helped that man. Hopefully people bear with us though as we have only just recently set up.

"The Low Mill trip filled up really early and we're also looking to plan a trip to Laser Quest at the Trafford Centre soon."

The Farnworth Christmas Markets are set to take place between Friday November 29 and Sunday December 1.

Farnworth and Kearsley Events Team are looking for individuals and businesses to trade at the markets.
