DRIVERS are being warned to keep away from a major roundabout as police attend the scene of a serious incident.

A 19-year-old man was treated by the emergency services at the scene after a crash involving a motorbike at Chequerbent Roundabout around 2.20pm this afternoon.

Police and ambulance crews were at the scene at Chequerbent Roundabout in Westhoughton attending the incident, with Snydale Way towards the M61 closed from around 3pm. 

Just after 3pm, a spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a collision involving a motorbike. We are still at the scene at the moment treating a male patient for injuries to his legs and arms."

The extent of the man's injuries are unknown as of yet. He has since been taken to hospital by ambulance crews.

There have also been fears that more people could be involved in the crash. It is reported that there could be as many as four vehicles involved, but circumstances of the collision are currently unclear.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called to a crash involving a motorbike at about 2.20pm.

"A 19-year-old man has been injured and the road is currently blocked."

The area was said to be gridlocked and the road down to one lane, with the damaged vehicles and debris blocking the roundabout.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: "Travel Update: Delays at Chequerbent Roundabout in Westhoughton due to a police incident. Please find an alternative route if possible #TfGMTraffic."
