A REMEMBRANCE concert is set to pay special tribute to former Bolton FC captain and wartime hero, Harry Goslin.

The former Bolton Wanderers player appeared over 300 times during a nine-year period for the club, including three years spent as captain.

His career was cut short with the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, where Harry and many other members of the team signed up to the fight.

The Remembrance concert to be held at the Albert Halls, Bolton Town Hall, on Thursday, November 7, will pack the evening with entertainment and music, while raising funds for Bolton cadets and veterans.

The story of Harry Goslin will be read by Rev Phil Mason, who calls Harry a “forgotten hero of the town”.

A leader on and off the field, Harry was an exemplary soldier who was quickly promoted to Lieutenant before serving in France, Egypt and Italy, where he was tragically killed in action.

While in Egypt, Harry retained his footballing background for a match against the King’s team.

Two of the club's new owners will be present on the night to pay their respect to the former player, as will Harry’s son, Bill Goslin.

The concert, the 30th anniversary of the event, will feature performances by the Lancashire Artillery (V) Band and other local artists.

The Act of Remembrance itself will be conducted by the Vicar of Bolton, Rev Canon Dr Chris Bracegirdle.

Cllr Fairclough added: “The Remembrance events are our opportunity to honour those who fought and died in the two world wars and other conflicts.

“We gather every November on the anniversary of the armistice at the end of the First World War, to commemorate those who fought in conflicts and who continue to serve our country.

“Every year the occasion becomes more poignant as veterans from the Second World War pass away and the conflict slips from living memory. It is even more important that their sacrifice remains in our thoughts.”

Tickets for the event, which begins from 7pm on the evening, are £6 and are available from albert-halls-bolton.co.uk, or by calling the ticket line on 0843 208 0500.

The event is a part of wider Remembrance events in Bolton, with the Annual Remembrance Service taking place on Sunday, November 10 at 10.40am on Victoria Square.

The service will include a silence and parade.
