POLICE are continuing to hunt for a driver involved in a race which ended when a man was knocked down and killed.

At Bolton Crown Court Daniel Salvin pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving after 59-year-old John Richardson was hit by his Vauxhall Vectra on September 20.

Judge Richard Gioserano was told that immediately before the collision on Rishton Lane, Great Lever, Salvin, aged 22, had been racing a VW Golf and glimpses of the two vehicles had been caught on several CCTV cameras around the town.

Following the collision with Mr Richardson, Salvin fled the scene and his Vectra was later found abandoned and on fire in Heywood Gardens.

Mr Richardson died in hospital from his injuries a week later.

Brian Berlyne, prosecuting, told the court that police have now identified the Golf from CCTV footage and have a picture of a man who had been driving it.

The vehicle is believed to have been regularly rented out by the owner.

"One of the CCTV clips police obtained shows the driver getting into that vehicle that day," said Mr Berlyne.

"The face of the driver is visible on that footage. He is not the registered keeper of that vehicle."

Salvin, of Eustace Street, Great Lever, appeared in court via a video link from prison and was remanded in custody until November 18 when he will be sentenced after the judge hears from Mr Richardson's family.

Michael McKeown, defending Salvin, said he is anxious to be sentenced soon.

Mr McKeown added: "He accepts racing. He accepts overtaking the Golf twice and that car overtook him twice. He thinks he was doing between 40 and 50mph.

"The defendant is having flashbacks and nightmares."

Judge Gioserano told Salvin: "You have pleaded guilty to a most serious offence.

"It is going to be a long sentence come what may.

"I am hoping there will be some more news about the identity of the driver of the other car."
