Four fire engines were called to a fire at a chip shop in Farnworth earlier this afternoon.
They received calls after a chip fryer caught on fire in the Moses Gate chip shop on Egerton Street.
A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Crews were called to the address at 2.20pm after reports of a fire.
"Crews there used breathing apparatuses, hose reels and foam making equipment,"
A local business owner described how he saw smoke billowing out of the chippy.
He said: "I was in the back and all of a sudden, I saw smoke.
"It filled the back street and so I ran out of the front and it was all there too."
There were no reported injuries.
The spokesman added that crews were in the process of removing burnt material and were beginning to leave the scene.
