Gritters were out in force last night as temperatures plummeted to frosty conditions.

The gritters were sent out by the council to tackle icy roads, following wet conditions which has seen the region battered with heavy downpours.

Gritters carried out a "full route grit" from 7pm last night, covering the borough's main roads and ensuring the roads were as safe as possible for vehicles.

A Bolton Council spokeswoman said: "A full route grit covers 317 miles of Bolton.

"All the main roads and most of the bus routes are covered, so just over half of the total road network."

Torrid weather conditions have plagued the region over the last few days.

Rain has battered Greater Manchester and the north, which saw severe flooding in Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Homes and businesses were flooded, which resulted in Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreeing to chair the government’s emergency committee, Cobra.

The temperature is set to remain in single digits in Bolton through the rest of the week.
