MEMBERS of Burnley Road Bowling Club in Blackburn made a gallant effort to raise £700 in 1969, so they could build a much-needed club pavilion.

Chairman of the club, Albert Edwards said that there was nowhere for members to go if it rained and nowhere to welcome visiting teams with refreshments , and nowhere to hold committee meetings.

In April 1969, he told the Lancashire Telegraph: "We have already managed to raise about £120 with jumble sales and draws and suchlike and it has been hard work.

"But we are going to keep on organising money raising events and are writing to different firms and organisations in Blackburn to ask for donations.

"We are going to need some outside help to achieve our aim.

"The club is the most popular place for old age pensioners round here. We really need a pavilion."
