A DAD took his own life in his parent’s home after his chronic alcoholism caused financial and family difficulties, a coroner has ruled.

John Curtis, 60, started struggling with alcohol at the age of 17.

His drinking spiralled out of control, eventually costing him his job, marriage, and children – forcing him to move back home.

He would regularly ask family members for money, with his sister, Susan Espin, saying he had “every penny” from their parents.

On the morning of June 24, John waited until his father, Peter Curtis, left his home in Brighton Avenue, Heaton, to take his own life.

Peter returned from visiting his wife, Margaret, in St Catherine’s Care Home to find music blaring from the property. When he went upstairs, he discovered his son’s body.

Assistant coroner Rachel Syed, recorded a conclusion of suicide.

She said: “Very sadly John struggled with chronic alcoholism and that caused trouble with his family.

“There was no indication of any suicidal intentions and John was presenting in his usual way.

“To his father and sister, I offer you my heart-felt condolences.”

Speaking after the conclusion, Mrs Espin said: “It’s been a difficult time – we don’t wish him to have done this, but it was about so much more than the alcohol.”
