THERE could be no greater praise than being nominated by a pupil — and in this case our winner made such an impression, she was put forward by a child who has since left.

Lucas Gornall wrote about Sarah Twist, our Primary School Teacher of the Year: “She was really kind and always wanted to help.

“She put us in front of herself and always wanted to help us.”

He added: “She always gave use a smile at the door everyday.”

Miss Twist teaches Year Six at Johnson Fold Primary School and is a senior lead there.

She said: “It is very humbling to be recognised in this way, particularly by a former pupil.

“As a teacher at Johnson Fold, it is always a pleasure to work with our children and be part of such a strong, dedicated team.”

Cllr Wild presented Miss Twist with the award representing Bolton Council, which sponsored two awards.

She said she was delighted to represent the council and present the awards.

Cllr Wild said: “I am delighted to attend and represent Bolton Council, the council has sponsored two awards for five years.

“We all strive to be recognised for our achievements, there is nothing more gratifying than to be appreciated for a job well done.

“The honour of being chosen tonight selected by people who appreciate and value everything you do is something to cherish.

“So thank you for choosing teaching as a profession well done.”

Johnson Fold has been judged by Ofsted to be an outstanding school.

Ofsted reported: “Pupils thrive in this oasis of learning and care.

“The inclusive nature of the school and exceptional pastoral support from dedicated staff allow many pupils to overcome significant barriers to learning, attend regularly and become well-rounded members of the community.

“Pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education.”

Teaching at the school enables pupils of all groups to make outstanding progress from their starting points and are said to “inject plenty of fun into learning”. And pupils behaviour and attitudes to learning are described as exemplary — and are “eager learners who demonstrate high levels of curiosity”.
