FEBRUARY 1980 and we were reporting on the case of five Bolton men who were facing a £1,300 “holiday bill headache”.

The five - Brian Taylor, 24, of Fountains Avenue; Gary Aspinall, 21, of Gibbon Street, Mike Walker, 19, of Oriel Street; John Boyle, 19, of Merton Close and Melvin Smith, 18, of Glaisdale Close, were told they had pay back the money after spending five days in a Majorcan jail, just outside Palma.

Thomson Holidays had paid their bill with the five also facing charges for an extra night each at a hotel and medical expenses for one of the five who was injured.

Our photograph shows the “five hard-luck holidaymakers” arriving back at Manchester Airport following their ordeal, but in the knowledge that they had just a month to pay the money back.

Hopefully the bags of duty free helped somewhat.
