A YOUNG Bolton musician is hoping to bring a little light music to an audience in his home town.

Matthew Chadbond, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, will lead the Manchester Light Orchestra for a special concert at the Victoria Hall on Sunday.

Along with conductor Alex Webb he has put together a programme which features music which is rarely played live but at one time was immensely popular.

“The concert will concentrate on music which was originally broadcast on the BBC’s Light Programme,” said violinist Matthew. “When the BBC introduced the main stations we recognise today the music from the light programme was deemed to highbrow for Radio 2 and too frivolous for Radio Three and as a result it has largely disappeared.

“But we are hoping to bring back this particular form of music. It is extremely accessible and there are some wonderful tunes.

“It will be a great concert for those who have never been to an orchestral concert before. It will be very light hearted. Alex will be introducing all the tunes and it will be a very light hearted occasion.”

The Light Orchestra features around 40 of the finest young musicians in the North West. Many are either recent graduates of or still students at the RNCM.

“It’s a really enjoyable programme for the musicians too and this shows through when they are performing.”

The concert will be a fund-raiser for the Victoria Hall.
