Traffic officers arrested a man on suspicion of drink driving after his car struck the central barrier.
The driver was travelling West on the M67 when he lost control and hit the metal structure, causing damage to the car and the barrier.
North West Motorway Police posted the incident on their social media pages at 10pm.
They said: "Luckily nobody else was involved or hurt as a result of this selfish persons actions.
"#ME44 identified that the driver was under the influence at the scene.
"@GMPtraffic #fatal5 30 years’ service and still got it!"
The man allegedly provided a positive sample at the roadside and in custody that was over twice the legal drink driving limit.
