PROTESTERS made their feelings known outside Bolton Railway Station following a day of controversy.

Campaigners from the group Northern Resist gathered to voice their frustration over the quality of service provided by Northern.

The group was set up by disgruntled commuters following long periods of sustained delays and cancellations, particularly after a disastrous timetable change in May 2018.

Steve Sutton, who runs Northern Resist with Stephanie Pollitt and also founded the Northern Fail group, explained that the decision to raise rail fares had caused even more anger amongst passengers.

"The Northern crisis last year brought this service to national attention but those issues have not gone away, it's been in a state of decline since Arriva took over," he said.

"I get the train from Bromley Cross Station and it's very much a lottery, it's a lucky dip.

"Some days there's two carriages and it's so ram-packed and there's no way on it at all.

"But, the problems at Hall i'th' Wood are even worse.

"There you can have one or two trains pass without being able to get on any."
